Overview
Acer is better known as one of the best brands for making laptops but now the company is struggling to achieve the same success in the smartphone world. The company has launched many high-end and mid-ranged Android smartphones. Acer Liquid Mini is a mid-ranged Android smartphone by Acer. The device looks quite similar to its first-born sibling, the Acer Liquid. The device is gorgeous with it's curved top and bottom, the design also makes the device comfortable to hold in your hands. The handset is available in a series of colors including black, silver and green. The Liquid Mini comes up with many fun packed features but is the device worth buying ? I guess we'll have to dig in and find out.
Hardware
The Acer Liquid Mini comes up with a 3.2 inch TFT display with 256K colors. The device offers a low resolution of 320 x 480 pixels which means that the images on the display appear to be blocky which is disappointing. Typing on the small display can be challenging as well. Colors on the display are well balanced but the screen could use a little bit more brightness. On the positive side, the screen is very responsive as the device features capacitive touchscreen technology. On the top of the screen there is an Acer logo and an earpiece while below the screen you have the capacitive buttons. The top of the device is the home to the power button and the 3.5mm headphone jack. Below the device there lies the micro-USB port. The volume rocker and the dedicated camera button are on the right hand side of the device. On the back you have the 5MP camera, a speaker and an Acer logo. The Liquid Mini is powered by a 600Mhz ARM 11 processor with 512MB of RAM. The device offers 512MB of ROM. The internal storage is very low but no need to worry as there is a microSD car slot available which accepts a total of 32GB of spare memory. The device is 13mm thick and it weighs 108g.
Software
The Acer Liquid Mini runs on Android 2.2 Froyo. The device does not feature the latest version of Android. The User Interface on the device is quite simple. Acer has used Breeze, it's own skin, on top of Android OS. You dont have any scrolling home screens but instead you have only one homescreen. At the top of the main screen you have shortcuts available to your applications. With the help of a devoted icon, you can get access to your five homescreens. This is a little bit annoying as you always have to take an extra step to get access to your homescreens. Once you get the access to your homescreens then you can customize them in any way you like. There is a widget available on the UI known as the "history" widget which is quite interesting. This widget allows you to hop to the web pages and apps that you have used earlier. The notification bar offers many more options which are easy to get hold of.
Conclusion
The Acer Liquid Mini has many advantages as well as some disadvantages. The device has a slow processor, the screen is just average and the battery performance is not very good. On the positive side, the device has a powerful software, a gorgeous design and some useful UI tweaks. Other than that there are many interesting features in the device. Let's not forget about the camera app. The camera app is good for capturing occasional outdoor shots, the pictures are sharp with natural colors. However, there is no flash available and thus the indoor shots wont be good at all. The 5MP camera is only capable of recording videos at a resolution of 720 x 480 pixels. The Liquid Mini is not the best mid-ranged smartphone but if you are a fan of Acer's earlier Android smartphones then you will find the Liquid Mini interesting.
