As thin as before. More brilliant than ever.
The first iMac was a revolution: An all-in-one computer that put everything — display, processor, graphics, storage, memory, and more — inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Today iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we’ve ever built, and it’s filled with the latest high-performance technologies. Yet it’s still just 5 mm thin at its edge.
One of the biggest challenges Apple's engineers faced with the iMac enclosure was how to join the front to the back. The enclosure is so thin, it’s not possible to weld the pieces using traditional methods. So they searched far and wide for other ideas, and they found one in a process called friction-stir welding. It’s commonly used on airplane wings, rocket booster tanks, and other parts that simply can’t fail. This process uses a combination of intense friction-generated heat and pressure to intermix the molecules of the two aluminum surfaces — creating a seamless, precise, and superstrong join. You may not see it, but this iMac wouldn’t be possible without it.
A true work of art. And physics.
Precision and innovation have always been a part of iMac story. Bringing the Retina 5K display to the 27-inch Mac was no different. It meant making incredible leaps in design at every level - from reengineering the brains of the display to maintaining 1/100th of a micron tolerances within the display cell. Not to mention fitting four times as many pixels - and the power to drive them - inside. All without compromising the amazingly thin iMac design.
Orchestrating the performance of 14.7 million pixels.
A more advanced timing controller.
The timing controller, or “TCON,” is the brains of the display — it tells each pixel what to do and when to do it. Because iMac with Retina 5K display has four times as many pixels as the standard 27-inch iMac display, the TCON had to be able to handle more information than ever. But even the most powerful timing controllers available couldn’t manage this number of pixels, so we had to create a new one with four times the bandwidth of the previous-generation 27-inch iMac — up to 40 Gbps. Now a single supercharged chip beautifully orchestrates the symphony of all 14.7 million pixels.
The heart of the display panel is the TFT, or thin film transistor. The TFT transports the electrical charge to each individual pixel. By manufacturing an oxide-based TFT more precisely than had ever been done before, we enabled each pixel to charge quicker and stay charged longer. This was essential for delivering consistent and uniform brightness from corner to corner across such a massive display with so many pixels. And it turned out to be even more energy efficient, too.
Highly efficient LEDs.
Powering so many pixels without overheating the display — or compromising the thin iMac design — required more energy efficiency. So we switched to highly efficient LEDs for the new iMac with Retina 5K display, reducing power consumption while maintaining our high standard for display brightness.
With four times as many pixels within the same 27-inch screen, clear communication required organic passivation, or “overpass” technology, an innovation introduced in iPad with Retina display. It separates the pixels from the signals that tell them when and how to light up — preventing any “cross-talk,” or interference, that could result from putting so many pixels so close together. This maintains the quality of the image onscreen and keeps energy from being wasted while those signals are being transmitted.
Together with the oxide TFT, these innovations not only made the massive 27‑inch Retina 5K display possible, they also enabled it to consume 30 percent less power than the previous-generation iMac display.
Performance right to the core.
Fourth-generation Intel Core processors.
With a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor at up to 3.5GHz — and up to 4.0GHz with the Intel Core i7 processor — this is the fastest iMac yet. And since OS X is designed to take advantage of each core, iMac captures every bit of performance from the processor.
Turbo Boost 2.0, which comes standard on the new iMac with Retina 5K display, gives you an automatic increase in speed when you’re using a processor-intensive application like Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. And by shifting core frequency in small increments, Turbo Boost allows the processor to manage performance without sacrificing efficiency. All this takes place behind the scenes, so your work — and play — goes smoother and faster.
Visually Astounding Power
The latest AMD graphics.
All the pixels in the world won’t do you any good if you can’t quickly and efficiently command them into action. That’s why the new iMac with Retina 5K display features the latest AMD high-performance graphics — with up to 3.5 teraflops of graphics compute power. So you experience stunning motion graphics, jaw-dropping visual effects, and 3D graphics so true to life that you’ll feel like you’re part of the action.
High capacity. In a flash.
Fusion Drive is a breakthrough concept that combines the high storage capacity of a traditional hard drive with the high performance of flash storage. With Fusion Drive in your iMac with Retina 5K display, disk-intensive tasks — from booting up to launching apps to importing high-definition photos and video — are faster and more efficient. That’s because frequently used items are kept at the ready on speedy flash storage, while infrequently accessed items go to the hard drive. The file transfers take place in the background, so you won’t even notice.
For maximum performance, you can configure iMac with Retina 5K display with up to 1TB of flash storage.
Twice as fast. Just as versatile.
The ultimate all-in-one demands the most advanced I/O technology. Each tiny Thunderbolt port lets you expand the capabilities of your Mac. Connect high-performance peripherals. Transfer data at high speed. Even daisy-chain multiple devices. And the new iMac with Retina 5K display has Thunderbolt 2, delivering twice the bandwidth — up to 20 Gbps — for the fastest data transfers yet.
The next generation of wireless.
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, iMac takes desktop Wi‑Fi speeds over the top. When it’s connected to an 802.11ac base station — including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule — you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps. That’s triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you’ll get up to three times faster Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz‑wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever.
OS X. It’s what makes a Mac a Mac.
OS X is the operating system that powers every Mac. Built on a rock-solid UNIX foundation, it’s engineered to take full advantage of what the hardware is capable of. It’s designed to be as easy to use as it is beautiful to look at. It comes with an amazing collection of apps you’ll use — and love — every day. And it enables your Mac and iOS devices to work wonderfully together.
Mac and iOS are connected like never before.
With OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, your devices work together in even smarter ways. Now you can make and receive iPhone calls on your Mac, even if your iPhone is in another room. Send and receive both iMessage and SMS text messages on your Mac. Start an email, document, or browsing session on one device and instantly pick it up on another. And turn on the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone right from your Mac so you can get online in an instant.
Easy to learn. Easy to use. Easy to love.
