Clunky design aside, the ProDeskone 600 G1 boasts an excellent 1,920x1,080 IPS display, with vibrant colors and expansive viewing angles. When we watched a 1080p trailer for Thor: The Dark World, the orange explosions leapt off the screen, and we could move from facing to almost flush with the display before the colors started to wash out.
Unfortunately, the display isn't touch-sensitive, which is a shame because the Windows 8 experience proves much more enjoyable with a touch screen. The fact that the ProOne will likely be many users' first introduction to Microsoft's new OS makes this doubly unfortunate. Somewhat inexplicably, HP doesn't provide the option of upgrading to a touch screen, even on more costly configurations.
Powered by DTS Sound+ technology, the ProOne's speakers pump out volume loud and clear enough for the entire office to enjoy, although the bass lacks the oomph we expect from a PC this size. We could easily make out the highs and lows when we listened to Christopher Drake's pulse-pounding score to Batman: Arkham Origins, for instance, but the driving beat of the title track felt noticeably subdued.
The ProOne features a healthy selection of ports. You'll find two USB 3.0 ports on the left side of the PC, as well as an SD card reader, a headphone jack and a microphone jack. Located on the back of the computer—awkwardly facing downward—are two additional USB 3.0 ports (one of which is fast-charging), two USB 2.0 ports, stereo audio out, an Ethernet port, PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, a DisplayPort and an RS-232 serial port. A SuperMulti DVD drive can be found on the right side of the PC.
The ProOne 600 G1 ships with a wireless mouse and keyboard, as well as a USB dongle to connect them to the PC. The peripherals are plain but functional—standard fare for business users. The keyboard proved comfy and offers plenty of travel and tactile feedback. The mouse felt a bit small for our hands but didn't suffer from any stuttering.
Unfortunately, connecting the mouse and keyboard to the PC proved to be quite a challenge. The USB dongle that shipped with our review unit refused to properly connect to the USB 2.0 ports on the back of the computer. However, when we plugged the dongle into one of the USB 3.0 ports on the side of the PC—which the instructions specifically warn against—the mouse and keyboard connected correctly.
The ProOne 600 G1 ships with a bare minimum of preinstalled software. HP's own software proved quite helpful for resolving issues such as poor Internet connectivity and sluggish performance. Software Setup helps you install drivers and recommended software applications, while Support Assistant keeps track of updates from HP, fine-tunes the ProOne's performance, and contacts customer support. HP Documentation provides—you guessed it—a Reference Guide and a Getting Started Guide. Our favorite application is HP Quick Start, which mimics the Windows 7 start menu—a feature that will undoubtedly be sorely missed by Windows 8 neophytes using the ProOne at their office.
HP also provides some welcome applications designed specifically for business users. HP Client Security helps you encrypt the hard drive and restrict unauthorized access to the PC. Password Manager remembers your passwords, enabling you to make them longer and more varied without worrying about forgetting them. Credential Manager lets you set up multiple levels of security, including your Windows password and a PIN. Finally, File Sanitizer allows you to shred your files (securely delete them from your system) and “bleach" free space on your hard drive (preventing users from viewing the original contents).
HP claims that the ProOne 600 G1 and its other platforms experience 115,000 hours of testing prior to release. Nevertheless, users will be glad to know that if something does go wrong, the ProOne is backed up by a 3-year limited warranty covering parts, labor and on-site service, including 24/7 telephone support.
