Nikon 1 is equipped with both "phase-detection AF," which is superb for shooting fast-moving action at sporting events, and "contrast-detect AF," which is excellent for capturing subtle details of a beautifully lit night portrait.
There is wide coverage provided by 73 focus areas in phase-detection AF and 135 focus areas in contrast-detect AF that lets you catch subjects even at the edge of the frame in sharp focus. This AF system features an extremely fast focusing speed, allowing you to capture fantastic images and movies across a wide range of environments.

High speed isn't the only thing that is extraordinary about Nikon 1's continuous shooting.
The autofocus of Nikon 1 V2 tracks the subject and allows you to capture an impressive series of sharp images even when shooting at a high speed of approx. 15 fps, such as a bicycle approaching rapidly. What's more, Nikon 1 V2 can continuously capture the scene at approx. 60 fps with focus position for the first frame fixed, useful when shooting a fast-moving subject in a stationary position such as someone taking a golf swing.
Note: Number of pictures possible with high-speed continuous shooting is approx. 45 frames at 15 fps, and 40 frames at 60 fps.
Note: Above values are approximate.
Critical moments in particular scenes, like a skateboarder taking to the air and performing a dynamic trick, are often very difficult to capture. But with the new "slow view" function, such perfect moments can be yours. When you press down the shutter-release button of Nikon 1 V2 halfway, the camera rapidly captures a series of 40 frames. While the shutter-release button is half-pressed, the camera shows you each frame in slow motion on the electronic viewfinder or the LCD monitor continuously, so you can choose the best moment to extract for a still image. Once you've made your decision, all you have to do is press the shutter-release button all the way and the camera will store the perfect moment of your choice.
You can time your shot just right, and still miss the perfect moment because of blurring in the image or a subject blinking. Nikon 1's Smart Photo Selector is a function that automatically captures those decisive moments, such as the fleeting expressions of your loved ones or other hard-to-time shots like group photos at a party. All you have to do is press the shutter-release button and the camera will capture a sequence of scenes before and after you press the button. Based on the image composition and motion, it will then automatically select the best shot and four reserves or, with Nikon 1 V2, you can discard the reserves and just save the best shot. This function is also convenient when you want to ask someone to take a photo of you and your friends.
Looking for more interesting ways to capture scenes in your daily life? Try Motion Snapshot.
In this mode, the camera records a slow-motion movie and a still image each time the shutter is released.
With Nikon 1 V2, you can record a 4-second-long slow-motion movie letting you express yourself even more dramatically, and also change the timing at which the still image is captured, enabling you to choose just the right moment. Shooting a slow-motion movie is as effortless as taking a photo, and you can also create a short movie collage by connecting them together afterwards. Share them with your friends and family, and you'll soon find them coming back for more!
Nikon 1 V2 offers Full HD video (1920 x 1080) with extremely high resolving power. Equipped with phase-detection AF, it lets you keep even a moving subject in sharp focus. Nikon 1 V2 also allows you to capture still images with an aspect ratio of 3:2 by pressing the shutter-release button while recording a movie at 16:9, without interrupting movie recording.
Now you no longer have to choose between stills and movies – both can be yours with the small, yet versatile Nikon 1.
Nikon 1 V2 comes equipped with a mechanical shutter as well as the electronic shutter. Having been tested through 100,000 cycles of release to ensure high performance, the newly developed mechanical shutter unit is extremely compact, enabling it to be incorporated in the slim body of the camera ready for a variety of shooting occasions.
By setting silent photography, the electronic shutter is automatically selected, and the shutter and control sounds are muted – convenient for situations such as taking a picture of your baby sleeping.
The camera automatically detects people's faces and tracks them in focus. Nikon 1 detects up to five faces and focuses on the one recognized to be the closest to the camera. This function has been improved for Nikon 1 V2 so that faces are detected even when they are small within the frame, and the exposure and white balance are adjusted to the closest face. This feature comes in very handy when taking group pictures or snapshots at a party.
