With the power to fill large rooms with THX®-certified sound, this cutting-edge receiver is ready to integrate and distribute entertainment throughout your home. More than a home theater processor, the TX-NR717 allows you to access music on PC, stream from MP3tunes, explore online radio, or connect your iPod/iPhone to one of two USB ports. You can distribute any of these various stereo sources to other rooms for house-wide entertainment. With a total of 10 HDMI® connections, this receiver converges HD content from all your components—even your smart phone media via a frontside MHL/HDMI—and provides easy input selection with InstaPrevue™ technology. HDMI also enables intuitive GUI with overlaid Quick Set-Up menu. Visually managing settings and playback—even across multiple zones—is easy with the Onkyo Remote App for iPhone and Android phones. Video upscaling to 4K, Audyssey DSX® seven-channel sound expansion, and Audyssey 2EQ® room correction are all included. Sound quality is quite simply the best in class, with powerful WRAT amplifier, three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry, and discrete output stage components delivering an otherworldly entertainment experience.
THX Select2 Plus certification is specified for rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is three to four meters and the room volume is around 56 cubic meters. To achieve THX Select2 Plus certification, the TX-NR717 had to meet the world’s most demanding standards for home theater audio quality and performance, and play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion.
The TX-NR717 incorporates three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry—an enhancement to Onkyo’s proven WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology)—and discrete output stage components. The design ensures low negative feedback for reduced distortion and improved handling of speaker impedance fluctuations. Quality circuitry dovetails with a heavy-duty power supply for instantaneous response to signal gains. Furthermore, PLL (Phase Locked Loop) jitter-cleaning technology enhances digital processing by removing clock noise. The result is clear, effortless sound under heavy loads.
The TX-NR717 can assign its Front High or Front Wide channel outputs to power speakers in two other rooms of your home. You can play music in the main room and Zone 2—or, alternatively, Zone 3—at the same time, or play a different audio source in either room. Use your stereo amp to power one of the rooms and enjoy any audio source from the receiver in all three zones simultaneously, controllable with Onkyo Remote Apps for iPhone and Android phone. Integrated house-wide entertainment is now a reality.
All Onkyo A/V receivers are capable of carrying high-resolution 3D video formats from source devices to your 3D-capable display via HDMI.
Selected Onkyo receivers offer 4K (4096 x 2160) upscaling of standard video sources such as 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i/p. Interlaced-to-progressive conversion and scaling are performed by Qdeo video processing technology from Marvell. Qdeo uses algorithms to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible wide-screen display, your content will look more detailed and cinematic than ever.
Note: 4K video playback requires a 4K-compatible TV. HDMI pass-through of 4K content from source devices is not supported. 4K upscaling of analog video is only available at 480i.
THX Select2 Plus components are ideally suited for a room where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is approximately 3 to 4 meters, and the room size is approximately 56 cubic meters. THX Loudness Plus is included in the specification.
Transporting high-definition (HD) video, 3D encoded HD video, and multi-channel HD audio, HDMI is the most desirable connection for home entertainment. Onkyo’s HDMI-enabled A/V components send and receive HD signals, connecting components such as Blu-ray Disc players, DVD players, media streamers, and gaming consoles to compatible HDTVs. Recent versions of HDMI also incorporate an ARC (Audio Return Channel) for sending audio from the TV tuner through the connected receiver, and for enabling the use of an overlaid high-definition GUI (Graphical User Interface) on Onkyo A/V receivers.
Dolby® TrueHD
Dolby TrueHD is Dolby’s next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD audio is bit-for-bit identical to the highest-resolution studio masters. Together with high-definition video, it offers an unprecedented home theater experience. Now listeners can enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture.
Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz
Dolby Pro Logic IIz adds a vertical dimension to your home theater soundstage, delivering an expanded surround-sound experience from any 5.1-channel or stereo source. Dolby Pro Logic IIz enables the inclusion of two Front Height speakers into your surround-sound setup. The Height channels carry ambient, non-directional audio that helps immerse you even more deeply into your movies and games. With Dolby Pro Logic IIz, rain seems to burst from clouds right above you, and helicopters fly realistically overhead.
DTS-HD Master Audio™ is capable of delivering audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master. DTS-HD Master Audio™ delivers audio at super-high variable bit rates—24.5 Mbps on Blu-ray Disc—which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. This bit stream is so fast, and the transfer rate is so high, that it can deliver 7.1 audio channels at a sampling frequency of 24 bits—identical to the original. With DTS-HD Master Audio™, you will be able to experience movies and music exactly as the artist intended: clear, pure, and uncompromised.
Audyssey DSX lets you augment a standard 7.1-channel surround set-up with two “front wide” channels*. Two extra speakers expand the width of the soundstage and help to produce a more realistic and immersive listening experience. Alternatively, Audyssey DSX can be configured to deliver “front height” channels. These channels carry non-directional audio that adds a new vertical dimension to your movies and games.
*Front Wide channels are not available with TX-NR616 and TX-NR609.
Audyssey 2EQ®
Loudspeakers are specifically designed to deliver sound without distortion or coloration. Nevertheless, walls, furniture and other objects reflect and absorb sound, creating distortion that is unique to your own space. To counter this, Audyssey 2EQ corrects problems both in frequency response and in the time domain (where most of the problems lie), across the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious—a clear, precise and natural sound.
Audyssey Dynamic Volume®
This technology allows you to set the volume level that you want and keep it there, without having to constantly adjust it. By anticipating sudden spikes and dips in the audio soundtrack and compensating for them in real time, Audyssey Dynamic Volume ensures consistent volume levels, regardless of the content you’re enjoying. Thanks to Audyssey Dynamic Volume, quiet dialogue is easier to pick up, loud passages retain their impact, and commercials are less intrusive.
On selected Onkyo receivers/players, interlaced-to-progressive video conversion and scaling are performed by high-quality Qdeo technology from Marvell. Qdeo is a versatile video processor that uses algorithms designed to erase video noise and artifacts such as jaggies and feathering. Played back on a compatible wide-screen display, your Blu-ray Discs and DVDs will look more detailed and cinematic than ever.
WRAT is based around a low negative-feedback circuit topology that works to reduce signal noise and distortion across the frequency range. A “closed ground-loop circuit” design is employed, in which each circuit has a separate link to the power supply. This helps to cancel individual circuit noise and keep the ground potential free of distortion. High Instantaneous Current Capability (HICC) enables WRAT amplifiers to immediately cancel the speakers’ reflex energy and instantaneously send out the next signal. The same high current better manages speaker impedance fluctuations, which can negatively affect performance.
192 kHz/24-bit DACs enable the best possible reproduction of standard and high-definition audio formats.
Seven-Channel Onkyo Network A/V Receivers
Seven-channel network receivers allow the Front Height and Front Wide channel outputs to be assigned to connect speakers in Zone 2 and Zone 3. Users may easily distribute powered audio to either Zone 2 or Zone 3 without having to change inputs, and retain a five-channel home theater system in the main room. Up to three different audio sources may be distributed to all three zones simultaneously with the addition of a stereo amp in either Zone 2 or Zone 3, and using a corresponding Zone 2/3 line-out.
Nine-channel Onkyo Network A/V Receivers
Nine-channel receivers are able to power Zone 2 and Zone 3 simultaneously using the four additional surround channel outputs, while retaining a five-channel setup for home theater. The user can distribute up to three different audio sources from the receiver across all three zones without the need for an additional stereo amplifier.
Selected Onkyo A/V receivers feature licensed InstaPrevue visual input management technology by Silicon Image. InstaPrevue technology displays a series of thumbnail videos on screen representing the available content on devices connected via HDMI. The feature is accessed via the Home Menu screen. InstaPrevue technology makes switching HDMI inputs and choosing content much easier.
MHL (Mobile High Definition Link) is an interface protocol allowing the connection of compatible portable electronic devices such as smart phones to A/V receivers. The protocol transports uncompressed 1080p video stored on smart phone for display on HDTV, with up to 7.1-channels of surround sound. On selected Onkyo network receivers, smart phones can be connected via a designated front-panel MHL/HDMI port. While officially ‘connection agnostic’, MHL cables commonly feature an HDMI plug and Micro USB connector. Once linked to an Onkyo network receiver, the user can control their smart phone using the system remote. Smart phones are recharged upon connection, and no separate power supply for the device is necessary while connected to the receiver.
