Specs at a glance:
Overview:
Xperia J is an android smartphone that is manufactured by Sony Corporation. The device is an entry level smartphone and is targeted at people either with a low budget or those who want to try out android without spending too much. Xperia J is amongst the Xperia 2012 line up. The device features a 4.0 inches multi touch screen, a beautiful design that is really friendly for our hands, android upgradable to 4.1.2 and the list can just go on. To see what the device has got, let’s get on with the review.
Design:
The design of Xperia J is rectangular just like all other Xperia 2012 line up. The device is all plastic, plastic that is matte and finger print resistant. Hence even it’s made up of plastic, it is a looker. The differentiating part, on the other hand, is that the back of the device is curved like one of its predecessor, the Xperia Arc. This curve makes it easier to hold in hand and looks extremely beautiful. The frame that divides the front and the back is made up of chrome which looks amazing and gives a really rich and luxurious feel. The front of the device is where we have the 4.0 inches multi touch screen. Above the screen is where we have the earpiece, the Sony logo, notification LED and the front facing camera. The bottom of the front is where we have the touch sensitive capacitive home, back and options buttons and the mic which is placed right under the options key. The back of the phone is where we have the 5 MP camera, its LED flash, the Xperia Logo and the speaker grill. The right side of the phone is where we have the power and the volume keys. The left side of the phone is where we have the micro USB/ charging port. At the top of the phone, we have the 3.5 mm headphone jack. The bottom of the phone is left blank with nothing of use over there. Still, between the frame of the device and the front, we have a hidden LED light that glows for a few seconds every time the device is unlocked. The back of the device is removable and under the back door, you get to see the mini sim slot and the micro SD card expansion slot. The matte back of the device has a soft rubbery feel that improves the grip of the device and the pleasure to hold it in hand.
Hardware:
The device runs on snapdragon cortex A5 processor clocked at 1 GHz. The GPU of the device is an Adreno 200. Along with the CPU and GPU, the device comes with 512 MB of RAM. Overall, the package will provide enough power for light, day to day usage and is ample for a low end, entry level smart phone. The display of the device is a 4.0 inches Multi touch display with a resolution of 480*854 pixels and a pixel density of 245 pixels per inch. The display, when further combined with the Sony Mobile Bravia Engine, improves the overall performance and the output of the display. For protection, Sony used Gorilla Glass display so the screen underneath the glass is safe. The device comes in one storage configuration; 4 GB internal storage and a Micro SD card expansion slot that can increase the storage of the device by up to 32 GB. The camera of Xperia J is a 5 MP, auto focus Shooter that records VGA videos. The rest of camera features are: Geo-tagging, touch focus and image stabilization. The LED flash enables the camera to take low light shots. The secondary camera on the device is a VGA camera. Other connectivity options include 2G, 3G support, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1, MicroUSB v2.0 and FM Radio. To conclude, the device packs a removable 1750 mAh battery with a talk time of up to 5 hours and 36 minutes and a standby time of 607 hours.
Software:
Xperia J comes with Android v 4.0.4 ice cream sandwich out of the box. This is not an issue because the 4.1.2 update is already available to download and install. Based on project butter, the UI is kept very simple and close to stock android. The device needs a light UI because if the user interface is made too heavy, it will totally destroy the performance and the user experience of the device.
Conclusion:
Considering the price tag it comes with and the market the smartphone is targeted at, the device is really a good device. Sony did a really good job starting from the sexy design and adequate hardware for the market segment. This is a great device for starters or for people on a low budget. This device is a complete android experience with a very low price tag.
