Specs at a glance:
Overview:
Xperia P is an android smartphone manufactured by Sony. The device is a mid-ranger and is amongst the NXT series that is the 2012 Xperia Line up. The device has a rectangular design with sharp edges and is quite identical to its bigger brother, the Xperia S. The best part is the aluminum Unibody. The device packs a considerably good hardware that provides a lag free, smooth experience. Just like other 2012 devices, it comes with a translucent strip underneath the display which further compliments the beauty of the device. Let’s dig in for some goodness and continue with our review.
Design:
Since the device is amongst the 2012 line up, the shape and design of Xperia P is quite similar to Xperia S. They both have the same rectangular shape, sharp corners, translucent strip and a curved back so that the device fits perfectly in our hands. The differentiating part is the material used. Xperia P is made up of Aluminum unibody which delivers exceptional looks and a rich, sturdy and luxurious feel. The front of the device is where we have the 4.0 inches, 540*960 pixels screen with a pixel density of 275 pixels per inch. To protect the display, Sony has used scratch resistant glass so that there is no room for scratches on the display. Above the display is where we have the earpiece, notification light, Sony logo, Front facing camera and proximity and ambient light sensors. The bottom of the display is where we have the touch sensitive capacitive back, home and menu keys and the translucent strip. The buttons are on the strip so considering them a single unit is also correct. At the back of the phone we have the 8 MP camera, LED flash, Sony Ericsson Logo, the same translucent strip and Xperia Logo. The right side of the device is where we have the speaker grill, the power button, the volume button and the dedicated camera key. The left side of the phone is where we have the charging/USB port, the HDMI port and the Micro Sim card slot. The top of the phone is where we have the 3.5 mm head phone jack. At the bottom, we have nothing of our interest i.e the lanyard eyelet.
Hardware:
The device runs on chipset from novaThor. The device is powered by a 1 GHz dual core cortex A9 processor. The GPU unit of the device is a MALI 400 GPU. To keep the performance uncompromised, the device comes with 1 GB RAM. The display is a 4.0 inches LED-backlit LCD 540*960 pixels display with a pixel density of 275 pixels per inch. The display features white magic technology and runs on Sony Mobile Bravia Engine. White magic technology is that every pixel now has a white sub pixel. This increases brightness, which means better outdoor performance, and saves battery when the display requires too much white (Web Browsing etc). The Camera of the device is an 8 MP sensor that has the capability to record 1080 videos at 30 frames per second and LED flash. Other camera features are Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama and image stabilization. The device also has a VGA front facing camera. Connectivity options are: 2G and 3G support, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth v2.1, NFC, MicroUSB v2.0 and FM radio. To conclude, the device packs a non-removable 1305 mAh battery.
Software:
The device was launched with android v2.3 gingerbread, then was updated to v4.0 ice cream sandwich and then further to v4.1 jelly bean. It shows that the device has a really good update history. Based on project butter, the User interface of the device is quite simple and is very close to stock android.
Conclusion:
The device is a really good device and serves the Mid-range segment of the smartphone market. The design is extremely beautiful and sturdy and a very good hardware. The weak point, on the other hand, is that the device is limited to the internal storage. No SD card storage is a problem. Secondly, the battery of the device too is not that impressive. 1305 mAh will go empty in no time if the device is under heavy use. If you are a light user and just need a smartphone for basic purposes or as a secondary phone. The device is a great device but if you love multimedia and are a heavy user, battery and internal storage both are a problem.
