Specs at a Glance:
Xperia Z1 is an android smartphone that is manufactured by Sony Corporation. Sony is one of the Smartphone manufacturers who have faced ups and downs in their life time and have enough courage to accept their mistakes. 2013 lineup is a proof. The Xperia Z1 is a great smartphone running on the latest and the most powerful Snapdragon Processor till date, a very good camera, an amazing rectangular design that is very similar to Xperia Z and many of other features and goodness that will be discussed in this review
The Xperia Z1 features an extremely beautiful and elegant design. The shape and design is very similar to the original Xperia Z. The device is all glass at the font and the back just like the Xperia Z. The differentiating point is the metal chassis. Unlike the Xperia Z, the sides of the Xperia Z1 are made up of aluminum. This has indeed added to the weight of the device but considering the premium feel it offers, it’s totally worth it. The device is 8.5 mm thick and 170 grams heavy. The extra thickness is thanks to the larger camera sensor and a juiced up battery. The front is where we have the gorgeous 5 inch TFT Capacitive touch screen. The top of the front is where we have the Sony logo, the front pacing camera, Sensors, Speaker grill and the notification light. At the bottom we have nothing because the back, home and recent application buttons are a part of the screen. Hence the bottom of the front is all empty. At the back, we have the 20.7Mp 27 mm wide camera sensor, The LED flash, the Sony and the Xperia logo. The right side is where we have the Micro Sim card slot, the power button, the volume up and down button and the dedicated camera shutter key. The left side is where we have the Micro SD card slot, Micro USB port and the dock connector. At the top of the phone is where we have the 3.5 mm headphone jack, the bottom is where we have the speaker grill.
The hardware side of the Xperia Z1 is absolutely amazing. The device runs on the latest and greatest Snapdragon processor and one of the best GPUs’ available in the market. The device features a quad core snapdragon 800 processor, 4 krait 400 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz. The GPU is an Adreno 330 which has the ability to play any game no matter how rich the graphics are. To make an amazing bundle, the phone is equipped with 2 GB of RAM so that whatever we throw at the device, there is just no stopping. Other specs include a 5 inch 1920*1080 TFT display and a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch. The display is a triluminos display and when combined with X reality engine, Sony made it sure that display quality is not compromised. The display is protected by Scratch resistant and shatter proof glass just to make sure that a few falls to the ground are not an issue. The device comes in one storage variant that is 16GB internal storage and an expansion slot that supports a Micro SD card up to 64GB. A 20.7 MP camera that supports 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second and has the following features: geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, image and video stabilization, HDR and panorama. The sensor is the exciting part because it is a 1/2.3 inch Image sensor that is 70% larger than the average sensor that is usually 1/3 inches. The larger sensor and the BIONZ image processor make sure that the pictures are great with less noise and maximum detail. The front facing camera is a 2MP camera that is capable of recording 1080p at 30 Frames per second. Other specifications include connectivity options that are: 2G,3G and 4G connectivity, a 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, 4.0 Bluetooth, FM Radio and last but not the least, NFC support. To conclude, the device packs a huge Non-removable 3000 mAh battery just to make sure that all the goodness of the device has ample juice to make the device last longer.
The device comes equipped with Android 4.2 jelly bean out of the box. Future software updates should not be a problem because of the top notch specs and brilliant software update support by Sony. The user Interface on the other hand is quite simple and resembles a lot to stock android. The user interface has not too much to offer. This is where Sony really lags behind other competitors.
To conclude all this, the device is a great device and has all the great features that a must buy smartphone should have. The issue is with the user interface, it is very close to stock android. If you prefer a User interface that is very close to stock android, this is a great choice. On the other hand, if you love features that are specific to different manufacturers (Smart features of touchwiz, Zoe on HTC sense etc), you may not be extremely satisfied by the User interface.
