Electronic Arts lights the lamp as it builds on the success of their NHL 08 which earned the title of Sports Game of the Year. In addition to the highly acclaimed offensive shooting mechanism of last year's game you can now perform one-handed dekes to play past the defense. For its part, the defense has been bolstered with additional control abilities that let you intercept passes and regaining possession after checking your opponent. Improved physics sends players flying after getting slammed into the boards. And, since that would likely result in a fight in a real game, the fight mechanics have been retooled to let you throw down your stick and throw punches instead. The new Be a Pro mode is another highlight of the game. Taking inspiration from EA's FIFA and NCAA football titles, you can now strap on the skates as a promising AHL rookie and create every aspect including his style of play from cross-checking defenseman to speedy sniper with your coach expecting different actions based on your position and teamplay. Dynamic Skill progression improves your skills as your career progresses –a feature that is also featured in Dynasty mode where you build an entire team to championship caliber. Build a Play returns with the ability to design plays that take place across the entire ice rather than just the offensive zone. Online leagues and tournaments await with full six-on-six play with championships held to decide the top team.
