Samsung has dominated Android market share, thanks to its Galaxy S series. The flagship series by Samsung, which has been rated most favorable and reliable by the masses. One of the most recent flagships of the Korean electronic giants is the Galaxy S9. The Galaxy S9 was released earlier this year in February and instantly made headlines, thanks to its specs, aesthetically improved design and cool new features. It felt like Samsung almost hit a jackpot, but as one can say, we are never content and can always find things where Samsung could have done better.
Having said that, Samsung did play smart and cashed in on the success of the Galaxy S8. Samsung listened to the feedback from its fans and users and worked on tweaking the specs of the S9’s processor and some more improvements here and there. As they say – you don’t fix what’s not broken, and Samsung did exactly that. In this Samsung Galaxy S9 review, we will take a closer look at the changes, improvements and new features. So, lets get down to it!
Design:
Samsung Galaxy S8 proved to be a breath of fresh air when it was released last year, especially when it comes to design. It was less bezel and more of the screen which actually kept the size of the phone the same as before, but with a bigger screen. I loved it and am sure most of you did too. For the Galaxy S9, Samsung kept same aesthetics and ergonomics and worked on improving the design of the Galaxy S8 rather than starting from the scratch.
The Samsung S9 is still one of the slickest phones around and is only 8.5mm thick. The bezels on the top and below has reduced further and it boasts a 5.8 inch curved display. The S9 has a polished aluminum frame with front and back protected with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. It also has an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. Keeping these things in mind, Samsung has taken durability into the account and made sure that these delicate looking Smartphones are not so delicate. The phone has a very classy look and comes in evenly matched amazing colors, which are Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Titanium Gray, and Lilac Purple.
The position of the fingerprint reader has been moved below the camera sensor on the S9 as compared to its predecessor where it was just beside the camera sensor. The lock/power button is on the right side of the frame and I like the fact that its placed very conveniently so you won’t have to look for it every time before you unlock your phone or power it on/off. One the left side there is a volume up and down buttons and just below there is a Bixby – virtual assistant button.
Display:
The Samsung Galaxy S9 sports a 5.8 inch Super AMOLED display with 1440 x 2960 pixels and pixel density of 570 pixels per inch. That’s just numbers, you got to see it to believe it. The display is bright as ever and the colors are vibrant and make everything look lively. The viewing angles and outdoor visibility are quite good, but you may observe some color shift along the edges. It is also HDR 10 compliant, which means it is capable of streaming HDR content from websites/apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. and do it well. This should make the S9 the automatic choice for the users who watch a lot of content online on their Smartphones.
Performance:
The Samsung Galaxy S9 specifications are quite impressive. The Galaxy S9 comes with either Snapdragon 845 or Exynos 9810, based on the region. You can expect a similar sort of performance and handling from these two chipsets. The smartphone is paired with 4GB of RAM to handle all the multitasking and gaming you plan on doing with ease. The smartphone has done a great job and after several hours of continuous use and gaming, the phone was still asking for more. Rest assured, its one beast of a phone and has the capability of handling whatever you throw at it with ease. The Smartphone comes in 64/128/256 GB storage options, so choose wisely as there is no SD card slot unless you plan on buying dual SIM variant where the second SIM card slot can be used as an SD card slot.
Galaxy S9 comes with a 3000 mAh battery, which usually lasts for a day of normal use. You may end up charging it by late evening if you like to watch lots of videos, browse the Internet and game a bit too. But Fast charging makes up for running out of juice this quick. If you go head to head between Samsung Galaxy S8 vs Galaxy S9, both of them offers a similar kind of on screen time. It would have been ideal if Samsung would have considered to add a bigger battery to S9.
Software:
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is running on Android 8.0 (Oreo) out of the box, which you can expect to receive upgrades for at least a couple of years. As it comes with pre-installed Android, you can expect all the goodies from Google. Apart from that, it also comes with some cool new additional features from Samsung. The Iris scanner and face recognition screen unlock are the most talked about. Samsung did its best to work on these two security features to make it as smooth as possible. It did work well but, if you’d compare it with Apple’s Face unlock, you might disappoint yourself. Bixby is another thing that Samsung talks about a lot, so far it has not lived up to the expectations. Bixby 2.0 is touted to release soon and we’ll wait to see how it performs.
Camera:
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is equipped with a primary 12 MP camera sensor with OIS, auto focus and LED flash. While the secondary camera has an 8 MP sensor with autofocus and HDR, which is perfect for your selfies. But what’s worth noticing is that it has a variable aperture lens, yes, you heard that right! It is the most innovative side of the Galaxy S9. Full marks to Samsung for pulling this off. The S9 can shift between f/2.4 and f/1.5 aperture, this allows you to capture amazing photos not only in daytime but in night as well. This lethal combination when used right, in pro mode, you will be able to capture some of the best pictures so far.
