Refrigerant R410A (HFC)

Most of Toshiba air-conditioners use the refrigeration fluid R410A which does not contribute to ozone depletion.

Refrigeration fluids are chemical connections of basic elements out of the periodic table. Though not all basic elements are adequate for forming a refrigeration fluid connection. Some of them are toxic, some are radioactive and others have boiling points, which are not suitable for cooling processes. If we keep that in mind, there remain only 8 basic elements (carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine and bromine). In addition, chlorine and bromine can’t be considered either, as they destroy the ozone layer. 

R-410A is a near-azeotropic mixture of difluoromethane (CH2F2, called R-32) and pentafluoroethane (C2HF5, called R-125), which is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning applications. Unlike many haloalkane refrigerants it does not contribute to ozone depletion, and is therefore widely used. Carrier Corporation was the first company to introduce a R-410A-based residential air conditioning unit in the marketplace in 1996. Now R-410A is the preferred refrigerant for use in residential and commercial air conditioners in Japan and Europe, replacing R-22.

Toshiba air-conditioners use the refrigeration fluid R410A. Toshiba air-conditioners are always filled with a specific quantity of refrigeration fluid. This pre-filled quantity of refrigeration fluid is sufficient for a specific length of pipes. For longer pipes refrigeration fluid has to be added. Specific details about the fill-up quantity per meter of refrigeration pipe are stated in the service and installation manuals.

R-410A is incompatible with former used R-22 refrigerant. R-410A should only be used in equipment specifically designed and constructed for higher pressure refrigerants. R-410A operates at considerably higher pressures and requires the use of special tanks, gauges and recovery equipment. R-410A designed systems employ thicker walled tubing, and compressors capable of withstanding the higher pressures of R-410A.
